Cheadle Heath Nomads join our league at a significant point in their history, as the club celebrates its centenary in 2019.

Back in 1919, with the World War One just ended, a group of individuals began a fund raising project to raise £1000 to buy the piece of land 'on the other side of the bridge' in Cheadle (as opposed to Cheadle Heath!) to create a sports club for the area.

In 1921 the club opened with Cheadle Heath Nomads FC at its core, although it also provided facilities for Cricket, Tennis and Ladies' Hockey, and the site in Norbreck Avenue in Cheadle – just over a mile by road (and less as the crow flies) from Cheadle Town’s Park Road home -  remains the club’s base to this day.

Nomads joined the Lancashire and Cheshire AFL and stayed in the L&C until 1994, when they stepped up into the Mid Cheshire League, winning the 2nd. Division in their first season.

Nomads consolidated in the First Division until 2004 when it merged with Linotype F C. Linotype were in the same league (now The Cheshire League) but were having problems retaining their facilities in Timperley, and with Nomads also struggling both on and off the field a merger of the two organisations made sense.

So Cheadle Heath Nomads became Linotype Cheadle Heath Nomads, and the newly formed committee included George Gibbons and Roy Welsh from Nomads and Brian McGuinness from Linotype, all of whom are still involved at the club today.

In recent times the club won the Cheshire Football League championship in season 2013-14, and remained near the top of the league in the seasons since, coming 2nd, 5th. and 4th.

However, as well as success on the field, over the same period there were significant improvements to the playing surface and the facilities with the addition of new changing rooms, the erection of a 50 seater stand and a significant spend on improving the drainage.

The plan was to aim for a move into the NWCFL for season 2019/20, but the re-structuring of the League for season 2018/19, provided an opportunity too good to miss while at the same time providing a significant challenge for a group of individuals to do two years’ work in one.

The club's facilities will soon include floodlights (by the start of the season), hard standing and new barriers, standing accommodation, spectator toilets, and more improvements to come.

The move up into our League also led to the decision for the club to change its name back to the original Cheadle Heath Nomads F.C. in time for the centenary celebrations next year.

Chairman George Gibbons believes that the club has the capability to make an impact this season.

“With the number and quality of the team off the field, we can look forward to putting together something significant on it”, he said.

“We are excited about the fresh challenges and new experiences we will encounter along the way, hopefully forging some long standing football links.

“Being part of the Hallmark Security League has always been our long term goal and we will be doing everything we can both on and off the field to make it a success”.

On the field, manager Andy Gray will be looking to the longer term, as he looks to build a squad capable of challenging at the top of the table.

“We will start with the basics and be competitive, while playing a good brand of football”, said Andy.

“We also have the opportunity to develop younger players through the 2nd team, which will be playing at a good level in the Cheshire League, and bring them through to the higher level of football in the NWCFL.

“It’s important to us as a club that we look beyond the first season at this level, and myself and the management team will be working hard behind the scenes to constantly improve, and adapt our training and match awareness to ensure that we progress season by season”.
