Ryan Quick Off The Mark For Blues

Contender for fastest goal of the season arrived in Monday night’s game between Winsford United and Congleton Town, in which Ryan Mellor opened the scoring for Winsford with a goal timed at just eight seconds.
The Blues kicked off and the ball went to James Rothwell, whose shot struck a defender and looped high over the Bears' back four.
Mellor was the first to react, steering the ball past Congleton keeper Dominic Kurasik.
Considering that it was Winsford's first home game in eleven weeks, it was a great way for the Blues to celebrate their return to the Barton Stadium once again, although the game eventually finished in a 2-2 draw.
Winsford United Secretary Bob Astles said: “I was poised over the computer screen making sure I started the stopwatch with the Referee’s whistle, when I heard a shout “We’ve scored”. I looked up to see the players congratulating Mellor. There were just ten seconds on the stopwatch”.
However, as far as the Blues are concerned, it’s not the quickest goal ever seen at the Barton Stadium, as Bob recalled.
“Some years ago Winsford scored after 6 seconds in a game against Atherton LR. What made it more remarkable was that it was the opposition that kicked off.
“A Blues player pounced on the ball and sent it down the left wing to Les “The Legend” Miranda who steered it round the opposing goalkeeper and into the net.
“The time was confirmed by the Referee”.
